The Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka MCU, finally got its own Spider-Man in Tom Holland when Sony decided to share the universe with MCU. But there was reportedly a time when the studio was clueless about in which direction to go after Andrew Garfield led The Amazing Spider-Man 2—after finishing TASM 2, producer Amy Pascal called Marvel boss Kevin Feige asking for some help. But it took an unexpected turn for Feige as Pascal hurled her lunch at him.

Peter Parker has been under Sony since Tobey Maguire’s franchise, followed by Andrew’s film series. Sony’s decision to share their Spider-Man universe with the MCU led to the making of No Way Home with all three Peter Parker actors. It was both critically and commercially successful. Tobey and Andrew are now part of the MCU, and with the concept of Multiverse, they can appear in other projects as well.

However, initially, Sony’s Amy Pascal was not very fond of the idea. In an old interview with the New York Times, she recalled and revealed what happened between her and Kevin Feige when she called him asking for help. From there, the studio was reportedly at a loss about what to do with Spider-Man. Pascal said, “That is the truth. I called Kevin and said, ‘Help.’ And then he came over to my office for lunch and said, ‘I know how to help you.’ And then I threw a sandwich at him.”

Kevin Feige said he did not just want to give her advice but also to walk away. Feige did not budge because of the flying food item directed at him. The Marvel boss then gave Amy Pascal his billion-dollar idea over the phone.

Pascal recalled that Feige suggested that if Tony Stark made Peter Parker’s suit, it would be for Sony to share Spider-Man with the MCU. She explained, “I understood the possibilities of what we could do together. To have Iron Man and Spidey in the same world, one rooted more in technological innovation — the new suit…felt so much more modern. It has taken a lot of work. But just look at the results. Pretty fantastic, right?”

Tom Holland appeared as Spider-Man for the first time in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Holland had his first solo movie, Homecoming, in 2017 and is probably gearing up for the fourth installment. The last Spidey movie, No Way Home, earned $1.92 billion globally.
