Grogu’s surprising introduction in The Mandalorian, commonly known as Baby Yoda, took fans by storm. His mysterious origins and significance have continued to intrigue Star Wars enthusiasts throughout the show’s two seasons. As viewers explore Grogu’s backstory further, they speculate about his role in both the series’ storyline and the broader Star Wars universe. A fan theory from Reddit suggests that Grogu, also known as “The Child,” is part of a longstanding cycle where a child grows up to save the Chosen One from falling into darkness.

Speculation arises from the saviour cycle theory, suggesting that Ahsoka Tano could have trained Grogu to eventually mentor a new Chosen One in a later phase of the Star Wars timeline, especially considering her appearance in The Mandalorian’s second season. This theory implies that Grogu might have been the one to guide Rey in The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker, steering her away from darkness to fulfil her role as the universe’s saviour. However, this raises the question: where was Grogu during the sequel trilogy? One possibility is that the sequels were already finalized before The Mandalorian, implying that Grogu was merely a concept in Jon Favreau’s mind. Another possibility is that Grogu met his demise between The Mandalorian and The Force Awakens, disrupting the cycle he may have been destined to continue.

Considering the potential demise of Baby Yoda may pose a significant challenge. However, what if his death ultimately fulfils his destined purpose — sacrificing himself to save someone from falling into darkness? This sacrificial act could be directed towards characters like Din Djarin, whose rumoured Force sensitivity could make him a candidate. Alternatively Considering Grogu’s connection to Luke Skywalker and the events preceding The Force Awakens, it’s conceivable that Grogu sacrifices himself to save Luke. Subsequently, Luke could play a pivotal role in once again rescuing the galaxy from peril.

Fans have primarily directed their attention towards Ben Solo/Kylo Ren when considering the crucial event of the Jedi Temple’s destruction, seen as the trigger for Ben’s fall to the dark side. Yet, amidst the turmoil, Luke emerges from the wreckage. It’s conceivable that Grogu intervened to rescue Luke Skywalker, setting in motion a series of events where Luke later saves Rey, empowering her to ultimately liberate the galaxy from Palpatine’s control.

In order for Grogu to recommence his training under Luke Skywalker, he must come to terms with his choice to abandon his Jedi training, as depicted in The Book of Boba Fett. Despite the heartfelt reunion between Grogu and Mando, it’s evident that the youngling is deviating from his destiny by opting to remain with his paternal figure rather than following the Jedi path. As evidenced in The Mandalorian Season 3, Grogu’s Force abilities continue to evolve, presenting a considerable risk due to his lack of formal instruction from Skywalker. The Child is in need of guidance to refine his powers and develop a responsible approach to wielding the Force. Although fraught with potential consequences, it appears inevitable that he will eventually return to Luke for training.

Grogu’s act of sacrificing himself to rescue Luke Skywalker isn’t unprecedented in the Star Wars universe. Characters with immense potential have previously given their lives to aid the Chosen One in safeguarding the galaxy. In “A New Hope,” Obi-Wan Kenobi’s sacrifice allowed Luke to escape the Death Star, sparking hope for the Rebellion. Similarly, in “Return of the Jedi,” Darth Vader’s final act of defeating Palpatine ensured Luke’s survival, effectively ending the Galactic Civil War and securing the galaxy’s salvation.

Grogu’s sacrifice possibly represents a departure from the well-established pattern seen throughout Star Wars history. Through his selfless act and the subsequent sacrifice of Luke, Grogu paved the way for Ben Solo’s significant sacrifice in the ultimate battle against Darth Sidious in The Rise of Skywalker. With the defeat of Palpatine and this noteworthy sacrifice, Star Wars might have concluded its tradition of sacrificing key characters to ensure the survival of the main protagonists.

Grogu’s growing strength after his Jedi training raises doubts about his absence during the events of the Sequel Trilogy if he were still alive at that point. It would make more sense for the overall narrative of the franchise if Grogu had passed away before The Force Awakens. While his demise would be tragic, it could offer the poignant conclusion that The Mandalorian needs. Like the prequel trilogy, The Mandalorian’s ending may not be a cheerful one. Knowing that the galaxy is headed for another conflict with the resurgence of the Imperial Remnant from the ashes of the Galactic Empire, embracing an inevitably sorrowful conclusion could be more appropriate. Ending on a somber tone reminiscent of Revenge of the Sith could heighten the emotional impact of The Mandalorian.

Concluding with Grogu’s sacrifice to rescue Luke Skywalker allows The Mandalorian to explore the darker aspects of the Star Wars universe while also laying the groundwork for hope in future installments. Grogu’s sacrifice wouldn’t be futile; instead, it would contribute significantly to the galaxy’s redemption, even if he doesn’t witness the subsequent positive changes firsthand.
